This course framework explores how the meaning of freedom in the United States has evolved from the end of World War II to the present. Moving through the Cold War, the social upheavals of the 1960s, the crises of the 1970s, the rise of modern conservatism, and post–9/11 global conflicts, the course challenges students to analyze competing ideas about government, citizenship, and power. Through a mix of readings, media, discussion, and writing, students engage with history as an ongoing debate shaped by perspective, conflict, and change.
